Ivy won't attach to a whitewashed wall - why?
I have whitewashed a plaster wall outside and applied several layers over. I did this to create an old world weathered wall look which peels, etc. and looks great.
However, Now I want to grow ivy up the walls and have "trained" it with concrete nails up the wall but the tendrils will not seem to grab on to the wall and climb on their own. In fact the plant wants to bush out rather than attach itself to the whitewash (too dry or too much lime maybe?
I have tried watering the wall to keep it wet but does not seem to help. Is there a product I can spray on, ground fertilization or some way to get these tendrils to latch on? I live in Northern CA where this stuff grows really well and it has been well over a year now.
Thx any input.
