Is this a weed?
Hi Everyone- New here and looking for some help.
I am trying to determine if the below is a weed or not. I have a few patches of this on my otherwise nice green lawn and I am trying to see if I should be concerned or ignore it. It seems to be a thicker bladed grass that clumps.
Please see image below.

Not sure where you are located, but we call it nut grass. Not a weed, but not a grass, either. Dig the clumps up and throw some sand in the hole. Your natural turf should take it over in short order. I think one of the pros on this particular forum uses the analogy......pull on it. if it comes up easy it was not a weed.

Thanks for the quick reply.. I am in Connecticut.
I have been pulling on them and they come out relatively easily. (maybe I'm just stronger then I look)
Because they are not a "weed", does that mean that my weed killer and preemergence weed control doesn't seem to affect it?
Thanks again!

Kinda depends on what you are using...it's more of a grassy weed and I think it spreads underground by runners..not seed. If you don't get a healthy bunch of root like things...they'll grow back. EDIT...true nut grass does grow by seed...so you might want to check with a local garden center to get a good ID.
Most of the time it's easier to just pull the small clumps and let them fill back in....if it gets into a big patch somehow...dig or pull it out and reseed.

I'm in CT also and it's called nutgrass here too. Some of us call it things less polite because it can be a real PITA to eradicate. You can get a lot of info if you Google nutgrass.

Grass or weed, if you don't want it, the way we get rid of stuff like that around here is to paint the leaves with roundup - makes a non-selective herbicide selective

Definetley not Nut Grass. Nut Grass gets its name by the liitle stalks that grow and on top a seed which looks like a nut. I am in florida and we get Nut Grass all the time. Really the only way to ger rid of it is either a Round Up type product or pulling. Nut grass also has a very good root base and will just tear at the soil, leaving the root below just to sprout again. sorry for the rambling. Hopefully this helps.

Otown, you have to post the picture to a server such as photobucket.com then copy/paste the IMG code. Just like I said to Kerry, if it isn't nut grass, give us a name.

I tried using TinyPic to upload which is a sister site to Photobucket. Well anyways that grass looks to be a Dallis Grass or a Goose Grass.

Not goose grass. The stems aren't whitish at the base and the leaves are too flat. You may be on to something with the Dallis Grass. My dad always called it Johnson Grass. OP will know when it puts off the long spindly shoots with the seed stems on top. Our nut grass is clumpy similar to Johnson Grass.
