Should I lay sod this late in the year?

I live in Memphis TN and I have a backyard full of sand and dirt. I would like to get some sod down soon because my dogs are bringing in crazy dirt. I have been meaning to sod before now but have been unable to. I called my local sod farm and they said after a major frost last night the sod is now ready to go dormant. Should I continue to lay sod this late in the year? I'm afraid it won't take root and I can't keep my dogs out of the back yard. I'm afraid they may tear it up before it roots.

My only other option would be to put down some rye seed for the winter only and then lay sod in the spring.

Thanks!

The sod farm wants to sell you sod - if they resist, I would too

You can try the rye, don't know what kind of results you'll get this late in the year
