Too late now but we sometimes throw seed after the grass has gone dormant for the year if there's some left in the garage, some of it will germinate next spring
You're cool season grass territory, blue grass and rye tend to dominate with rye being the easiest (quickest) to grow

I have never tried it, but I have read that spreading grass seed in the fall will not germinate, but get in the cracks when the snow thaws. With all the moisture from melting snow, its apparently good for germination. So it will germinate not within a few days of when you spread, but a few months later. I even read about spreading grass seed in the snow of all things as the snow will melt, there will be the aformentioned cracks in the ground left by melting snow for the seeds to get in and then germinate.
I always thought it had to be mild to germinate, and I would think the grass seed would not germinate as the soil is just a little bit above freezing after the thaw. But hey I have read about late fall or spreading in winter from three different sources.
I wouldn't spread grass seed in the snow though, I think I would look a little silly.

If you think of how mother nature seeds, she seeds in the fall but she counts on birds, animals, water and wind to disperse the seeds further from the main plants. seeds dispersed in fall winter will germinate in the spring you just cant tell where they will be by then.
