bumpy lawn

My daughter purchased a new home, the back yard is a nice size with a full lawn, but the lawn is full of bumps of grass. It is grown on clay, is it the frost that creates these bumps, and can she flatten the lawn by wetting and rolling a heavy roller over it or is there another explanation of this condition?

I have a stepson who hates to mow so when he does he often has clumps of grass laying everywhere. I've often suspected that it the reason his yard [also clay] is so bumpy. I would think you'd need to add soil and rake it out to fill in the low spots.

Hi jkuzk:

Running a heavy roller over the lawn only compacts the soil and makes it difficult for the roots to spread. Not good for the lawn. Raking in soil in the low spots as Marksr suggests is the best way to level out a lawn if necessary.
