Renting a power seeder....

I got 150lbs of mixed fescue from our regional distributor. The last time I did much of anything to the 'lawn', including fertilizing, has been 5+ years. The yard is a mix of everything... grasses, weeds and moss. Lots of shade, sandy soil (edge of the marsh), no irrigation, etc....

I have about an acre open around the house. So.. the question is: Do I cut the existing grass close and rake the debris before I fire up the Bluebird rental seeder?

Or would it be better to get one of the guys with a tow-behind .. the smaller version of the ones farmers use?

... forgot to ask: would it make a difference if I put the seed in the Frig for a few days ahead of time. It may be an urban myth, but I gather the seed thinks; "Winter is over! .. Time to play!" ...maybe?
