new grass surviving the winter?
I plated a little late this year and I am just starting to see some grass sprouting. I don't see and nights below freezing the the 10 day forecast but I assume it won't be long till there is frost every night. What are the chances that the new grass will survive? What determines that? The root structure?

if the grass blades get enough growth they should survive but yes it's the root structure that most determines if it lives. While I personly am not sure of the right fertilizer for this time of year, a good fall fertilizer now and a winter fertilizer put on at 11/2 the recomended rate should show good results.

We always try to plant in time to get three mowings in before the grass goes dormant for the year, not that I have any idea where that notion originated....
That said, I think you're in fragile territiory here where the seeds have started to germinate but may not have enough time to grow the root structure they need to survive the winter. I'm not sure I'd use anything other than a starter fertilizer on grass as young as you have but certainly would use one if you did not when you planted the seed.

I have seeded pre-dormant and dormant with the same results, I always add 20-30% more to adjust for loss. I have also found that the grass will develop root and foliage under the snow! any fert. you apply now will be for root development and future reserves stored in the roots, as long as the ground is not frozen there is some root growth activity as I have observed and noted..
