What type mulch?

I'm trying to improve the appearance of the weed patch (not really so bad) known as our "planting bed", which is directly in front of our house.
I asked two of my neighbors, who both have super green thumbs, about what type mulch to use, and should I put landscape cloth down under the mulch.
Of course, they disagreed about everything!!

After searching on this site, I'm going with the landscape cloth, but I'm still unsure about the mulch: Neighbor #1 says to use wood mulch as "it's the best".
Neighbor #2 says to use rubber mulch-it lasts longer, and the wood attracts bugs-especially termites-to the house.

Who is right? all input/suggestions are appreciated.
If wood mulch is better-what is the best choice?

Thanks in advance.

Weedblock (Typar) and cypress mulch. It will last 3 times as long (or longer) as pine bark will retain its shape and looks really good. Cypress won't attract bugs. Yeah it costs more, but you expect it would.

I agree...cypress or cedar. My only concern is that I've seen sites that express concern about the cutting of cypress in the southern US.

What about rock mulch? We have decomposed granite in front of the office and it looks good but is too soil-like and actually has weeds growing in it (yes, there is landscape fabric beneath) but I have 3/8" limestone at home and that does not allow for much to grow in it.
