Red face Repair a scorched patch of grass

June 18, 2012.

I placed a clear plastic mat on a patch of grass for a few hours. The sunlight scorched the patch of grass on my lawn!

Please refer to the attached photograph. The patch measures approximately 4 feet by 5 feet.

Does anyone have any suggestions to remedy this challenge? Yikes!

Thanks, The Beagle.

Just leave it. It will grow back. You might want to get a small bag of patch repair seed and sprinkle some on it.

What would be cool is to systematically place the mat in other areas to make a large chess board. Then have a party and play human chess with real people....LOL. ( Just joking)

Anyway I have done this several times with tarps and the grass always grows back in no time.

Yep, it will grow back. Pretty scary the first time you do this, though, isn't it?

If the mat was down a short enough time the heat only burned the portion of the plant above ground and the roots should regrow pretty quickly. If the roots are alive they will regrow faster than trying to start over with seed so I'd give it a week and see if you notice new shoots coming up. If the ground is dry you can help by watering the area.

If you want to see green grass right away you can cut out the burned area and replace it with sod. you would have to water it very frequently until it became established but you would have grass immediately.

I agree. Water it frequently and give it a month.
