how do i reclaim my lawn
I moved into a new house last november. The lawn was not taken care of for 2 years. I know the grass was cut once during the entire season last year.
Problem- I have thousands of old, dead dandelion weeds covering entire yard. Grass is spotty, with no bare spots; because of all the weeds. I've thought of renting a de-thatcher to remove the dead weeds and for the fact the grass was 12+ inches when it was mowed in late october. Or do I just seed and fertilize and hope grass will return being full and lush.
Any advice to reclaim my lawn?

It depends on how nice a lawn you want. If you want it to be all nice, pretty grass you are probably better off spraying to kill the entire lawn, tilling, seeding, fertilize and cover with straw. Obviously that's a lot of work and expensive but when over half of the lawn is weeds or undesirables it's usually better to nuke it and start over.
A less expensive option is to keep what you have mowed. Over time the lawn will adjust to being mowed. Some weeds will die out but many will stay but you'll eventually have something green that resembles a lawn.
