Need landscape recommendations for area under lilac bush (see photos)

Our house has a lilac bush, and the area under the bush does not grow grass well (even after several attempts to reseed the area). It keeps getting worse every year, and is almost completely grass free. It's also a pain to mow around and under the bush anyway.

I'm looking for recommendations for landscaping the area around the bush (mulch, brick along the outside etc.). We would like to list the house soon, so we'd like it to look a lot better. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

P.S. The lilac bush actually looks really nice when the leaves grow, although these photos show it being fairly ugly.

Thanks!

I would put down landscape fabric to help keep moisture in and cover it with a good dark mulch. Won't much grow under that bush since full bloom shades so much.

I agree! Mulch makes it look nice and makes mowing easier too

Thanks for the help! Should I maybe do a perimeter of landscaping blocks around the bush, flush against the sidewalk...and then mulch on the inside? I could probably match the same block I have against the house...

You can use block/brick, something else or nothing - whatever floats your boat
IMO a radius [with or without a border] would look best.

I'd use a border. I like paver blocks but they wouldn't match what you have on the other side of the sidewalk.
