Fill or top soil

Looking to do some work on my lawn, will get pictures for you tomorrow but I need a bit of fill or at least top soil. My question is, what is the max depth I should go with top soil? I havent figured out how much cubic feet I exactly need, but just trying to get the basics down first.

In my opinion there is no maximum depth. I would want six inches as the minimum depth.

For topsoil? I just want to get the best bang for my buck so if its 6-8" of topsoil, and I need to fill 14" of grade, than I want to grab the cheaper fill for the rest.

What's in the fill?

Personally, I would want nothing but topsoil but all I have is sand and rocks, so....

As I originally stated, six inches minimum of topsoil. If I had fourteen inches to fill it would depend upon what the final cover would be. If grass then I would probably want eight inches minimum of top soil and if trees then make the entire fourteen inches topsoil.
