These weeds?

Hey everyone.

So, I did pre-emergent herbicide (bonide?), Scotts Grub-x and Dr Earth fertilizer

Are these weeds? Also, for dead spots, I'm guessing reseeding is only real option? Since I put down that herbicide, Im guessing that I should just wait till fall to seed?

Thanks for the discussion!

Yep, they're weeds. Weeds are basically anything you don't want to grow in a designated area
Not my field of expertise but I'd think within a month of apply the herbicide you should be able to rake up or till the soil and plant new grass.

When did you apply the herbicide? If applied early Dimension (the herbicide in Bonide's crabgrass preventer) works pre emergently on many weeds and crabgrass. If you were late it only works post emergent on crabgrass and no so good on other weeds. They recommend 16 weeks after application before planting seed but there's no harm in trying before then.

I believe I applied it the last week in April?

I think it was this product (I have to check the bag when I get home)

Yea, that's pretty late even for New Jersey. I would imagine you've got crabgrass prevention but not much protection against other weeds.

when should I have done it? guy at lawn place advised me to hold back due to the late winter. I was hoping to have done it before april 15

Guessing now theres not much to do about it short of an herbicide (or pulling)?

I try to make sure Dimension or any pre-emergent is down before the nights get above 50. Crabgrass germinates warmer but if you want to head off the other weeds that germinate at cooler temps you have to apply earlier. And, since it has a long lasting affect getting it down a few weeks early doesn't hurt.

For the weeds that are up a post emergent like Trimec works well and is inexpensive.

---
If you don't have a huge lawn and the weeds are few enough that you can do a spot treatment with Trimec I think it's better than hosing the entire lawn. Not only is it yet another chemical (2,4-D). It's one of the herbicides that made up Agent Orange. It's minus the PCB contamination that is believed to have caused most of the health problems but still you don't want to be spraying it any chemical more than needed.

my backyard is about 1400 sq ft / front about 1100

Do you mean just buy a spray bottle as opposed to the garden hose attached version?

Yea, I normally use a pump up sprayer and just spray the weeds but you can also use a squirt bottle though I find my trigger finger soon gets tired.
