Installing synthetic lawn. Do I need sub base?

I would like to install synthetic lawn in my front yard. How can I tell if I need a sub base under the fake grass? How can I determine if the ground is hard enough to go without a sub base? Its a small patch, about 231 sq ft. I would like to go without the sub base if possible because its pretty costly.

I think all quality artificial turfs recommend or specify the site prep required and every one I've seen specifies a base of at least two layers of material. I would follow the installation instructions for the turf you choose. Since it's a small area at least you will be dealing with a smaller volume of materials and prep but when talking stone nothing is light and easy.
