Is Weed and Feed Application Ok in July

In the spring, I put down some new grass seed and I put down crabgrass preventer in other areas. However our lawn has many weeds. They are growing like crazy. I just picked up some weed and feed which is part 2 of a series of fertilizer treatments. The package says apply May to June. Is it too late to put this down in July in Nebraska ? I guess my lawn would be considered Kentucky Bluegrass.

Thanks
Ken

I would say not to do it with all the heat, etc. Your best bet is in February with a good application of dolomitic lime. Having your soil tested for needed nutrients for grass by your local county extension service would be spot on.

Weed and Feed

Does the weed and feed kill the weeds by sticking to the weeds' foliage?

No. I don't think you should apply that product now. In general weed & feed products are a compromise as fertilizer and herbicides often need to be applied at different times. Applying fertilizer and herbicides during the heat of summer when the grass is probably stressed is not a good idea. It's not the end of the world but the heat of the summer is generally when you just try to coast through.

How big is your yard and how bad are the weeds? Is walking around the yard with a sprayer hitting just the weeds an option? If you have too many weeds for spot treatment I might go for a overall herbicide treatment but would avoid fertilizing until summer temperatures subside.

The yard is fairly big, two acres. I guess the weeds are worse in some areas so we could spot spray where the weeds are but was hoping I could put the weed and feed down to kill two birds with one stone. So is July too late too fertilize as well? What is the deal with these 6 treatment ferilizer programs. What is the really needed ? I do not care so much about color as i do keeping the weeds at bay. When is it really critical to fertilize/herbicide. I appreciate the feedback. Thanks - Ken

Spot application of weed killer is acceptable during the summer but you should do nothing with the grass. My own failures with using "weed and feed" products preclude me from ever recommending them or using them again myself.

A light application of weed and feed is acceptable in summer. We all have a problem of applying too much. The spray weed and feed that you put on the end of a hose does a good job for me on the few occasions I use it.

In general the heat of summer is not a good time to do much of anything including fertilize. It encourages the grass to grow at a time when it's already under stress which can further stress it. It's also a good time to avoid herbicides if possible because even though you may apply something specific to broad leaf weeds the herbicide also stresses the lawn. It's one reason why the recommend a limited number of applications per year.
