Till before laying sod?
I just bought a house and I need to lay sod. the back yard was just recently graded. Do I need to till or just rough it up with a steel rake and lay down some top soil? Or do I need to till up a recently graded back yard?
Thanks!

Just rake it and make sure you don't have clods or dips. Water the heck out of it after you lay it. If watering isn't wetting the ground under the sod then you need to water it more.

I agree - the recent grading makes tilling unnecessary.
Have you thought about getting a soil test done before you lay the sod? Have you killed all of the weeds?

I'm not a sod/grass expert. This is what I was told at the sod farm when we resodded my daughters lawn. She had sod at her brand new house and it looked like crap. Within a few years it all died. We tore it up and redid the lawn.
The soil should be friable for at least 3-4 inches, otherwise the sod might have difficulty establishing roots. Stick your finger in it. It should go all the way in. Wet the soil as you are putting the sod down and water the sod immediately after.
If you can, buy your sod from a sod farm/nursery not a BigBox.
