How do I set my spreader?

This may sound easy, but I'm confused.

Based on my soil analysis, I want to apply 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. I'm going to be using Scotts Weed and Feed (28-0-3), so 1 pound of nitrogen calculates to a rate of 3.57 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

The Scotts package says I should set my spreader at 3.5, which produces 2.86 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet. Given that the product is 28-0-3, I think that will give me .8 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.

Instead of 3.5, what should I set the spreader at to give me 1 pound of nitrogen rather than .8? Is it as simple as 1 / .8 X 3.57 = 4.5?

Look for a setting that gives you half the application rate you want. Then run the spreader over the lawn twice. Make your second pattern 90 degrees to the first to help even the spreading and avoid missing spots.

Thanks for the advice. Your comment, though, gets to the heart of my we question. Are settings on a spreader proportionate? Is 5 half the measure of 10?

Generally I would say they are not proportionate though you can guess pretty close. A lot depends on what you are spreading. Some materials bridge so a small opening may allow very little material to pass but once you get to a big enough opening it becomes more proportional. I find it's better to error on the light side. If the opening is too small you just keep going over your yard until all the material is gone. If you use too large an opening you may run out before finishing and part of the yard got an overdose while the remaining got nothing.

With your spreader empty, measure the size of the opening at the settings in question.
