Controlling grass and weeds at the base of live hedge
I have been wondering and for most part struggling or just ignoring the tall grass and some weeds growing at the base / in between my long running live hedge.
I am wondering if mulching would be a feasible solution (never really seen mulch at the base of live hedge)...or what other approaches should I take?
Is it safe to apply weed /grass - controlling chemicals ??
I think they would damage the live hedge as well....
Any good ideas that don't involve manual, laborious trimming of grass in between the growing hedges would be appreciated.
thanks

Mulch is an excellent control, we use it everywhere to control grass and weeds, just need it thick enough, min of 4".

You can control grasses along a hedge if you are careful when spraying. Any product containing glyphosate (RoundUp) is very good at killing most plants and it's mainly absorbed through growing leaves. So if you only spray the weeds you don't have to worry about the herbicide being taken up through the soil into your hedge.

If Mulch is an option.... can I just "dump" about 3-4 inches of mulch or should I somehow prep the area ? Any extra steps recommended ? Maybe a single treatment with RoundUp (though I honestly worry about any chemical application) ??

I deal with this 6 days a week.
What works for me is hand pulling anything you do not want growing out by the roots.
Spread a per emergent like Preen, then adding the mulch.
It's also best to take the time to go rent a bed shaper to form a border so the lawn grass does not work back into the mulch.
