When is the best time to put in new sods?

I'm thinking about putting new sods in my back yard. When is the best time to do it? I live in Wisconsin.

No expert on sod but I always thought you could lay sod most anytime of year that the ground isn't frozen and it can be watered in.

My concern is, if I lay sods sometime in October (usually it starts to snow around November 10-15 in Wisconsin), will the sods have enough time to germinate roots into the ground? Will it come back in the spring? If I lay it around April, will it have enough time to grow roots before the sun/heat starts to dry the grass?

Around here sod starts sending out roots in the first week or two and is usually well established in a month.

Do you have an irrigation system?

I would wait until the worst of the summer heat has passed and at least 4-6 weeks before the first frost. You will have to water the sod very frequently at first so only install what you can properly water.

No I don't have an irrigation system yet. Should I wait until I have an irrigation system before I can lay the sod otherwise I may risk costing more money?

I had several homes that we installed sod and did not have a sprinkler system.

I have one but think they are as much a curse as a benefit, especially after 10 years and needing repairs yearly!

You just got to keep it well watered for the first couple of weeks!

As mentioned above you don't need a sprinkler system to establish the sod, just remember if you install one later you will be digging trench throughout the lawn.

Thank you. My back yard is mostly sunny but I'll be planting some trees in the future. What type of sod should I purchase so it works best in my location?

I don't know what sods are available or grow best in your locale. IMO that's a question best answered by your sod supplier.

Sod usually comes somewhat locally because of it's weight and shipping expense. You'll likely only have a choice between what one or two sod farms offer. They will likely have some variety of tall Fescue.

When it comes time make sure your yard is totally prepared and you have enough helpers to lay the sod. Once it's cut you've got about 6 hours during the hottest summer days to get it off the pallet and laid out. With cooler weather you'll have more time but about two days is the max.

Generally, early autumn is the best time to seed or sod grass. For Wisconsin, I'm guessing mid-September. The temps should be in the mid-60s during the day. If you sod, either hire a company to lay it OR have a LOT of help! Sod is heavy and hard to work with, if you DIY the more help you have the easier it will be on everyone!

After it is down, make sure it gets an inch of water at least once a week. Lightly fertilize after it is down and again in early spring.
