Advice on how to make an adjustable covering for my dogs
Along the side of my house there is a fairly narrow paved passageway (between the house and garden wall) that leads into the back garden. Around midday the sun is above the house and there is no shade, so I'd like to create some sort of shade covering for them in the passageway.
Because the passageway is narrow, the shade (cloth) has to be retractable so that people can walk through. In my attached doodle you will see that I'm thinking of some sort of steel rod frame that slots into wall hinges that can pivot up and down so that the frame can hang against the wall when not in use.
Can this work and, if so, how can I go about making it?

This is the area. Right now there is shade because of the time of day. As you can see, it's narrow, and the exit to the front must be accessible.
My steel rod shade-cloth idea (possibly on the parameter wall instead of the house wall) seems to make sense to me, since it can close towards the wall when I need to walk past.
What are your thoughts? I'm not very good at DIY, which is why I'm asking for advice.

Could something be installed higher up so that it would not have to be removed/folded up every time someone needed to walk by, that is going to be a real pain!
My first thought was a patio sail or awning!

My first thought was something permanent, but that would mean drilling into the house wall (because the left wall is too low; one would have to bend down while walking), which I'd like to avoid if possible. Also, if it's higher up, then wouldn't the sunshine have more chance of shining onto the ground, thereby making the covering redundant?
At this stage, it's still brainstorming, so I'm happy to throw around ideas.
