Too late to spread top soil?
I built a garage over the summer. Yard is pretty messed up I'd like get going filling in ruts left by construction. Am I crazy to start spreading top soil now? Will it wash away with the spring rain. I in upstate NY area Albany ny

Without a photo, I'm only guessing but you may get more erosion from the ruts than you would by filling them, particularly if the ruts run up and down hill. I think I'd fill them in now. Instead of soil, though, consider mulch.

If the ground is reasonably flat I would put down the dirt whenever the ground is dry and firm enough to get on without making new ruts. You won't be able to get grass to grow but at least you could get the dirt down and ready for spring. If you wait till spring you'll again have to wait for a dry period to work the dirt and might miss a good seed planting window.

Thanks. Yes it's pretty level. I think setting over the winter may help it settle better for spring grass seeding.
