French drain

Any thoughts on an outside french drain system? Landscaper wants to dig down 18 inches on outside and lay pipe. He says this will rid basement of water from floor wall joint. Just need opinions.

You gave us very little to go by. Any comment from us whether or not it will work is little more than a guess. My guess is that a shallow French drain could help but I don't think it's going to do anything about the water that's 6 or 8 feet underground.

He will also slope the lawn away from the house with dirt and seed.. I'm thinking the combination of the two could really help. Anyone have a French drain at 18 inches as I described?

Where is the water you need to divert coming from? At 18" below the surface, it's going to do next to nothing for a high water table.

Are there gutters and downspout extensions moving water away from the house in the first place?

The water comes in the floor wall joint in basement only after heavy rain or massive snow melt.

A French drain can not suck water up out of the ground. If you have water entering your basement down at the wall to floor/footer junction then that is where it needs to be addressed with a perimeter drain and damp proofing the wall and joint from the outside. A French drain on the surface won't hurt and it may help but simply grading around the house so surface water flows well away from the home will accomplish more.
