Placing stepping stone in sod

Have a question regarding stepping stones: is it better, or easier to lay the sod first, then cut out sections for the stepping stones, or is it better to lay the stone first, and place the sod around the stones? I'm using 24" square x 3/4" thick porcelain pavers, there will be a six inch space between each stepping stone. Also thinking of doing a geometric pattern, where a 12" x 24" rectangle will be placed beside each 24" square stone, with about a two inch space for sod, between the rectangle and the square stone, which would require a little more sod cutting.

If you are doing all this new. I would roll out the sod first. Plop down your stepping stones and make sure they are positioned where you want. Cut around them and remove the sod.

Id go the opposite, lay out the steps, get them in the correct orientation, heights etc, then lay sod around them!

Sod/grass is always the last step in a yard project!

Either way will work although I think it's easier to cut the sod and then insert the stones.
