No maintenance backyard ideas?
Hi,
I have a pretty big sized backyard about 600sq feet. I'm not into gardening and I don't like mowing the lawn. Is there any no maintenance (or low maintenance) backyard landscaping ideas that I can transform my backyard into?
Thanks!

Devils advocate for a minute. Whatever surrounds your property will be contributing leaves and seeds to add to your work list and hard to control.
Putting down gravel still needs to deal with weeds coming up through.
In some communities there may be a limit on the % of coverage of your property, buildings, parking lots and perhaps a gravel lawn.
Those are some of the down sides and there are more I'm certain.
On the plus side one can design a traditional yard where the lawn mower does the trim work while mowing. Often a yard is designed requiring far more work than necessary.
How large is the property, 1 to 10 acres?

Pavers, gravel, cement or pay someone to mow. Anything you plant is going to require some maintenance, so might as well just get rid of it all.

If you have simple plain grass or clover, they do have mowers now that are self driven like the iRobots. Not sure if they are worth the ~$2k but kids allowance isn't cheap these days either.

I know of two different people who used canvas. In one case he did his driveway but unknown where he got the material. In the other case more driveway and parking area was covered with a canvas like material used (and discarded) from the paper industry. Both cases it worked for years but looked a bit crude, a bit of a hack.

Bud's comment just made me realize, the local car dealer used fake turf for their grass. The weather here can be harsh on turf and it's lasted a couple years so far.

Just did a search to see how often they replace artificial turf, looks like 5 to 10 years and when removed they said it gets disposed of. One said to the land fill. Hmmm, maybe it would still be suitable for a less intensive use.

Thanks for the responses. I live in Toronto, Canada. When I first got the place, it had a unmaintained lawn. I mowed the lawn a few times and got tired of that, so I though I'd mulch the lawn and install a garden. That's when I found out I wasn't into gardening
Seems like going back to a lawn might be the simplest solution

What were you using for a mower? I mow half an acre with a riding mower and do tight spots with a walk behind followed by a trimmer. Really doesn't take a lot of time. I have discouraged grass or anything from growing next to the house to reduce the insect population trying to get inside and it reduces the trimming.
