Fall grass seeding

In an area of about 1/4 acre I had loam brought in and spread about 3 inches deep. I spread it all out then put down Scottís seed and gently raked it in. I put down starter fertilizer and watered every day. Then about 3 weeks later input down another application of starter fertilizer. I did this starting October 1st. We didnít have terrible down pouring rain and the temps were reasonably mild for a New England fall. The grass came up terrible!! Why??

A lot depends on your location and what the temperatures were. "reasonably mild for a New England fall" doesn't tell us what the temperatures were. It's very possible your weather hasn't been warm enough for good germination.

Grass starts going dormant at soil temps below 55 degrees, I think it's just way too late to be growing seed in New England.

May not have been enough - seed needs to be kept moist but not damp and this usually means two or three light waterings a day.
