Help identifying insect

Something has been attacking our rhododendrons and (to a lesser extent) azaleas. I can't see it but it leaves fine thread-like lines on the plant. It destroys entire branches, leaving them bare or with brown, shriveled leaves. Any help will be appreciated. Here's a photo:

It's hard to identify an insect without you having seen the insect. You can search for "azalea pests" and find a lot of information. Here is one link that might help.

Put a sheet of white paper under the leafs in various places and...... tap/shake/jostle the leafs to see what falls down....
