I know it's dead, but I can't figure out what happened - this ground cover used to extend all the way to my grass line. There's no difference in sun exposure and we had a relatively mild winter in Chicago except for an Arctic blast around the holidays. It was existing when we bought the house in 2021 and it's been relatively low maintenance, with the exception of my dogs really liking to go #2 in it all the time.
If it's unsalvageable, can anyone identify what this plant is so I can plant new?
My first guess is you have winter creeper. Since yours died back so completely I suspect it was the cold snap. Online it says it's generally good for zone 9a so if you got below 20f that could be it.
living in my backyard without paying rent and how do I evict it without killing?

Something has been attacking our rhododendrons and (to a lesser extent) azaleas. I can't see it but it leaves fine thread-like lines on the plant. It destroys entire branches, leaving them bare or with brown, shriveled leaves. Any help will be appreciated. Here's a photo:
