Smile Yard Light

Appreciate some assistance.

Have a yard light with a Mercury Vapor lightbulb.

Every now and then, the light goes out, but then comes back eventually.

We are wondering whether the Mercury Vapor light bulb needs replaced (about 30 months old), or if something else might be wrong.

Is this type of behavior characteristic of a Mercury Vapor light bulb that is failing? (A regular light bulb would just go out.)

Thanks for the help.

Without knowing the type of yard light or the wattage rating here is a basic explanation. There is a ballast in your yard light that "fires" the bulb inside the fixture.Your yard light has a heat sensor built in where the ballst is located that is supposed to turn off power to the ballast to prevent overheating of the ballast. This is a safety feature that turns off power to the ballast till the ballast cools down then turns back on.So what is happening is that the heat sensor is turning off power to the ballast which is why the light goes off and on.The solution is replacing the ballast. But please turn off power before doing this.If you are not an electrician make sure you draw a diagram of how this is wired before you dissconnect any wires as it can be confusing. You might also compare the price of a ballast compared to a new fixture as these ballasts are not cheap depending the wattage rating of the ballast.

Thanks for the info.

Will do some thorough checking.

Maybe a new fixture is the way to go.

What seeems confusing is that the light has never gone out for about two years, and in the last 3 or 4 months it goes out occassionally.

Smile Your welcome

The life of a ballast all depends on how much it is used and the outside conditions being that it is an outside fixture. So 2 years is doing good in my opinion.Could you tell me the specifications of the fixture? The wattage, voltage, and what kind of yard light? A pole light,a wall mount light? And if it is a pole light how tall is the pole? And what brand also if you don't mind.
