more ceiling fan help for dummies
Hello;
Recently bought a ceiling fan second hand but it does not have directions. I know I have installed them before but always with directions. I know little about wiring, but can follow instructions. I replacing the current light fixture with the ceiling fan. The current fixture is controlled by double wall switch. The left switch controls the light. I do not know what, if anything, the other switch controls. There is a black, a white and a red wire to the current fixture. The fan has a black, white and blue wire. How do you wire to the light?
Thanks for your help!! My wife is also grateful!!

It sounds like at one time there was a ceiling fan there and somebody removed it. You'll have to verify a few things though. Does the red wire connect to anything at the fixture right now or it is capped off ? At the double wall switch does the black wire connect to one switch and the red to another ? If there was a ceiling fan there before one switch would have controlled the light and one would have controlled the fan.

Bill, your assumption is correct (probably). The purpose of the black with the white stripe on the fan is clear, but the purpose of the red wire from the ceiling may or may not be typical. Your assumption would be correct most of the time if the circuit was wired by somebody who knew what the usual conventions were. But you can't count on that 100%.
