Wink How to detect ceiling joists?

Hello all,

I am due to install lights into a ceiling in my new home, but need to know where the joists for the floor above are. I know there is some sort of gadget that can detect them, but what is it??

Many thanks

James

A electronic stud finder will do it. So will a simple nail finder (a pivoting magnet). So will using a pin or small nail to poke exploratory holes. Some people can find the joists somewhat imprecisely by rapping on the ceiling with your knuckles or a hammer, although you need good ears for that.

These tricks only work well if your ceiling is drywall. If it is plaster, then finding the joists is harder.

Get the electronic stud finder.
