Installing a ceiling fan

Hello,
I'm planning to install a 54" ceiling fan in an upstairs bedroom. There is no fan or light fixture in place today, so I will need to add a gang box. My question is, if there is no 2x4 at the center of the room to attach a box, is there some type of fan brace kit available and where would I get it? I do have attic area that I can crawl into. Thanks for your time.

Yes, all home center sell a fan brace kit for about twenty bucks. This can be installed from below. If you can get to it from above, you could also just nail in an extra 2x4 between the existing joists.
