New Ceiling Fan Install

I'm installing a ceiling fan where there is currently no light or box. The wall switch in the room controls an outlet. I have attic access.

My plan is -

Disconnect the switch wires to the outlet (at switch and outlet) and re-wire the outlet so both plugs are hot all of the time (currently one plug is always hot). Are there any rules regarding the treatment of unused wires - cap them off?

In the attic, add 2x4 bracing between joists with light box attached to brace. Predrill joist and 2x4 and use screws to attach to joists. Cut hole in celing drywall.

Run 14-2 romex from switch to fan (light controlled by pull chain).

All of this reasonable?

Thanks

Instead of going through all that to add a brace, I would just buy a metal fan brace and install that. Would definatley cut down the time needed to be stuck up in the attic.
