Lightbulb Light fixture wiring with red, black and white wires

I am installing a new front porch light, but the wiring is baffling me. When I removed the old light I am pretty sure that the whites were connected to white, the blacks to black and a red wire was left on it's own. There are two whites coming out of the box and two blacks coming out of the box and I just connected the new fixture with all whites and all blacks together. The problem is that when I turned the power back on, the fixture stayed on whether the light switch was on or not! How do I fix this?

Disconnect the black fixture wire from the two other blacks (but leave the two blacks in the box connected to each other). Then connect the black fixture wire to the red wire in the box. Leave all three white wires connected to each other.
