Dimmer that won't dim

Dimmer that won't dim
Bought a single pole dimmer switch for a bedroom. Existing wiring had a ground, a wire to one terminal, and a wire stripped in the middle and attached to the other terminal (like it's feeding something else).
Thought it would be simple. Connected it to dimmer switch just as it was. Switch works on/off but does not dim. Any ideas?
Fixture uses 1 100W bulb.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!

If the dimmer turns it on and off but doesn't dim, then the dimmer is shot. It's really easy to fry a dimmer by misconnecting it just once. A lot of current through a dimmer usually kills it. Did you ever misconnect it? Or maybe it was bad right out of the box? Or maybe the store sold it to somebody else before you fried it and returned it.
