Ceiling Fan

I want to install a ceiling fan on the ceiling that is 18 Ft. high. There is no reinforced outlet. I can access the area through the attic. I would like some help in how to get electric to this fan. The fan will be run via remote control with no light kit. There is a light in the attic controlled by a light switch located in the hallway below. Is there a way to tie into that light or another light to get electric to this fan that I would like to install? Romax is currently up in the attic. Any suggestions would be helpful besides getting an electrician to do the work. Thanks!!

Selecting the right cable to tap power from in the attic is an art form. It is mainly a process of elimination, knowing which cables not to select. Do not select:
  • A cable running between a switch and the thing it switches.
  • A 240-volt cable.
  • A black/red/white/bare cable.
  • A cable on a circuit serving receptacles in a bathroom, laundry room, dining roon or kitchen.
  • Anything on an already-full circuit.
Once you rule those out, see what's left. As you notice, you'll need to figure out where each cable is coming from and going to. Fortunately, the weather is cooling down and spending all day in the attic is not as bad as it was in the summer.
