modifying a light fixutre...

I have a wall light fixture that needs replacing. The switch is located on the fixutre itself. I don't want to add a new switch to control the fixture. Can I modify a new light fixutre by adding a switch to it? - ie. drill a hole and add switch.

I would be reluctant to add a switch to the fixture itself. Unless you are a lighting designer, you might create an unanticipated hazard. I suggest you look harder to find a suitable fixture with a switch already on it, or install a regular wall switch near the light.

The X-10 powerhouse people have some slick wireless ways to accomplish this.

Check www.smarthome.com for ideas.

I had a second look at the old fixture. It was dirty and covered in layers of old paint. I stripped the paint and bought a new lamp shade. So, it's as good as new - a cool shiny retro light fixture.

thx for the help.
