recessed lighting in eaves

Can recessed lights built for damp locations be used in the eaves?

It's my understanding that you do not need to attach recessed lights made for remodeling to the joists. These lights just tighten onto the ceiling. Is this correct?

Hi deep6blue,
-There are some that just attach to the ceiling, but A. they may not be approved in your area and B. they're made for gyproc ceiling and soffit material is generally much thinner and way more flexible. NOT a good idea. Also I doubt if even at the inner edge you'd have enough headroom to put even a small light can.

I'm more optimistic than nomind. I think you can do this.

nomind, the headroom will have to be checked. But, there are quite a few houses in the area that are the same model and they have recessed lights.

If the soffit material seems weak, then I should be able to use the joist hangers (the kind for ceiling lights and fans) to hold the light in place.

John Nelson: Thanks for the confidence.

Sorry deep6blue, - I didn't mean to discourage you. It's just that I install a lot of security lights in those very areas, and more often than not find I can only just squeeze a 4" high box in there.
Anyway, on a more positive note, I did find in HD today some new lightweight light cans, with clip holders that could possibly hold on soffit. The overall hieght of the can is about 4 1/2 " Check it out, it may work for you.

You can also find cans designed for compact fluorescents that only need 3.5" clearance.
