How Do You Do Voltage Testing On Flourescent Fixtures?

Any help for the novice is appreciated. I'm have a fixture in an awkward place that makes removing the entire fixture a major event. 2 fixtures in series both went out at the same time which leads me to believe its not a ballast issue. I have a voltage tester but have never used it on flourescents - do I have to stretch one end to the other to test or is there a way to test on a single end of the fixture? Thanks

Don't test the fixture. Test the wires supplying the fixture. Start by shutting off the circuit breaker. Then remove the sheet-metal cover between the tubes. This should expose the wiring connections. Find the big copper wires bringing power to the fixture. Remove the wire nuts that connect these to the fixture wiring. Then turn the breaker and wall switch back on and very carefully test for AC voltage between these two wires.
