Question bulbs don't last!?????

We've lived in this house 33 yrs. My husband did the wiring (no official expertise in the area) along with everything else. The light in the basement stairwell burns out consistently after only a couple of weeks. We now have a fluorescent fixture and it does the same thing, just more expensively. My husband insists it has nothing to do with his wiring. And this is the only fixture that has the problem. Any ideas? Thanks so much for any input. Sincerely, Barbel

Your husband is probably right. There are a few wiring mistakes, mostly with multiwire (aka shared neutral) circuits, that can cause excessive voltage that can burn out bulbs quickly, but most of the time it's something else: vibration, excessive voltage, cheap bulbs, trapped heat, etc. One usual sure-fire approach to short bulb life is to buy 130-volt bulbs, usually available at better hardware stores. Other ideas are double-life bulbs, lower wattage bulbs, and dimmers. And don't discount the value of turning the lights off more religiously.
