Question Basement staircase lighting

I ave a basment staircase that is quite dark and could really use some sort of lighting. Their is not enough head room for an overhead light, and not really enough width to comfortablly accomodate a wall sconce. So......I was wondering if anyone knows of a recessed lighting product that I can install along the stairs, near the treads. Obviously something small. I found some small recessed halogen lights (meant for under cabinet use) tha tI thought might work but there are some wiring issues, and I am afraid that they will get too hot (as halogen lamps tend to do) Thanks for any suggestions.

An idea,

I'd consider some low-voltage outdoor deck and step lights. Here are some examples: and here: Look around a home center or a good lighting supplier.

They are 12 volt lights, but not halogen, I think they're standard bulbs, like the kind used for cars.

You will have to find a way to hide the transformer and wires though. For mounting, it will depend on the style you select. Some can be surface mounted, others will need a hole drilled into the riser or wall itself.

Hope this helps!
