Replace recessed light with ceiling fan and light

I would like to replace the recessed can light in my son's bedroom with a ceiling fan with a light. My husband tells me that I can't do this without cutting a big hole in the ceiling (thus requiring a medallion to cover to whole). Is this true?

If there is a simpler way to make the switch, please let me know! Thanks!

I don't know why you'd have to cut any hole at all. The hole that the recessed can has already made in your ceiling is plenty big enough. And the can is easy to remove without making the hole any bigger. Then you can put a fan brace kit in through the hole without making the hole any bigger either. Why does your husband think you will need to make the hole bigger (other than the fact that he doesn't want a fan)?

However, you may still need a medallion, or you may need to patch the ceiling to make the hole a bit smaller, if the existing can is bigger than the fan box. Drywall repair is pretty trivial if necessary.

None of this is that big of a deal.
