Exhaust fan hums after installing timer switch

Last month I replaced a regular wall switch that controls a bathroom ceiling fan with a Leviton 2-5-10-15-minute timer switch. During this procedure I did not touch the fan, but now it hums, and we can hear it throughout the house! The fan works, but on occasion at switch-on it will hum loudly and not turn. It was working fine before I started monkeying with things.

Any ideas?

The first thing I would check would be the connections that you made at the timer and verify that they are secure. You could also re-install the toggle switch to see if the problem still exists. It could be a problem with the fan that just happened to show up at the same time.

Check to make sure that that switch is rated to control a fan. Some such switches are rated for incandescent lighting only.
