outside motion lights

i have one motion light already outside how do i add another one on the same line to be controlled by the same switch?.

Whether you CAN do this depends on whether the motion detector lights you are using can operate correctly with a shared switch..not all will....consult with the manufacturer.

IF they CAN operate correctly with a shared switch, you can do this by running power from the existing light to the new one. It may or may not be possible, depending on how the circuit is wired, that you can instead run from the switch to the new light...if you want to go this route instead, open up the switch box with the circuit shut off and describe the wiring...ALL the wiring.


If this is a 20A circuit, use 12G wire. If it is 15A, use 14 guage wire. Most likely, you will be running either 12-2wg or 14-2wg Romex, unless your area requires other wiring methods.

Before proceeding further, determine whether the lights are OK on a shared switch.
