Replaced Switch-Fan Just hums

The pullchain in my celing fan broke. I replaced it with the recommended 4 wire switch. I was careful to copy the wiring pattern. 1=Yellow, 2=Purple, 3=Black and L=Orange. When I powered back up the fan only hums when I hit the first setting and does nothing on the other 2 settings.
Any ideas?

Did you replace it with the same type of switch (there are different types of pull chain ceiling fan switches.

I am thinking Yellow/Purple connect to the capacitor, and Orang goes to one of the fan windings and the reversing switches.

They look different but are rated the same. (I was told that they are interchangeble.)
They are both 3A 250VAC/6A 125VAC 4 wire switches. The one that came in the fan was smaller and was KTE brand. The replacement is a Harbor Breeze. Maybe I should look for a KTE brand replacement switch.

Its not the rating that is the problem, it is the switching action which is different.
