Dimmer on a 3way

I want to install a dimmer switch on 3 way lighting in the attic, but only want to do this at the top switch and leave the one at the bottom of the stairs as a regular switch.

My question is will this work ok and what if the dimmer is only left half way and I switch on from the bottom - will this only then switch the lighting on only half way...??

I just want to find out if I need to purchase 2 dimmers or 1.

Thanks very much.

Two ways to do this.

The first is as you describe. Use one dimmer and one three-way switch. The dimmer will dim and switch; the three way switch will only turn on the lights to whatever dimming level the dimmer is set at.

The better way is to use three-way electronic dimmers - one "Master" dimmer and one "slave" dimmer. Now you can switch and/or dim from either end (and they look trick, too...)

I guess the electronic dimmers would be pretty pricey, so I'll probably go with the other option.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
