Accent Lighting Wall Distance

I am planning on adding accent lighting with 4" recessed lights in our living room. The lights will serve more to wash the walls as opposed to lighting an object on the wall. Is there a rule of thumb as to how far they should be placed from the wall, and how far apart from each other? Thanks in advance.

Cooper Lighting recommends 18" to 36" from the wall, and 18" to 36" apart. They further suggest that the distance from the wall be the same as the distance apart. See this web site.
