Question In the dark.... messed up ceiling fixture

Ok, I admit I don't know what I'm doing, but I gave it a try. Heres my problem from the ceiliing I have a group of 4 black wires twisted together and a group of 4 white wires twisted together and 1 single red wire. Of course I don't remember how the old fixture was connected but this is what I have tried. New fixure has 3 whites together and 3 blacks together ....thats all.
I connected white >white & black > blacke and capped the single red- light is on but won't go off
I connected white>white & red, black > black ---nothing
I connected black>black &red, white > white ---- nothing
Any help to light up my kitchen again will be greatly appreciated.

Leave all the blacks together and alone.
Connect the whites from your new fixture to the other whites in the box.
Connect the blacks from your new fixture to the red in the box.
