Light Switch sparks when flip

My bathroom light switch gives off sparks when flip on. Does this mean it needs to be replaced?

You probably have an older "click" switch, and, yes, it is about time to replace it with a silent switch. The contacts are more encapsulated in the newer switches.

Thanks for reply. This is actually a new construction home....bought it two years ago. The builder must have put in cheap switches. Not all switches in the house spark, just the ones in master bath and masterbed. I'm guessing I have flipped these two more often than others. Any suggestion on brand of light switch that's long lasting and quiet. THank you

Leviton makes a good mid road switch. Cooper Lighting makes a good commercial grade switch with stab back-screw held attachments. I like these. No bending of the wires is necessary. Similar to the ones on GFCI receptacles.

Sparking Switches

When I flip on my light switch (while in the dark), I can see sparks behind the coverplate. Is this dangerous?

switch arcing

Virtually all switch contacts will arc, whether visibly or not and more or less depending on switched current level. A mercury (silent) switch will obviate this if this is a problem. Switching in that type occurs inside a sealed, mercury filled capsule, not in free space.
