I just purchased a new modern-looking halogen chandalier and I don't understand the wiring. There are 2 bundles of wires that are tied together. The first bundle is a red wire and a couple of black wires all bound together. The 2nd bundle is a red wire and a couple of white wires all bound together. Then there is a single black and a single white wire. My box only has 1 black and 1 white wire coming out of it. I tried attaching the black bundle w/ the red wire and the single black wire to the black wire in the box and the same w/ the white, but it shorted everything out. Please help

I am replacing an old ceiling fan. When I removed the old fan, there was a red wire and a white wire. It was simple enough to follow the directions in the manual to wire the new fan, using the red as black and the white as white. There were two black wires in the outlet box, but they wire wired together. The switch (remote) is proving much more difficult for me. The old fan had a simple on/off switch. When I removed that switch, it had three wires connected to it - red, black, and white. However, the new remote control does not require red, black, and white wires. The new remote has two black wires and a green ground wire. The instructions say that the two blacks from the remote should connect to two blacks from the wall. The green should just be connected to the outlet box as a ground. The instructions also warn me not to connect both the hot and neutral wires to the transmitter wall switch. And that's where I'm confused. Which wires am I supposed to hook into this wall remote transmitter? I turned on the power and checked the wires with a multimeter. Touching black and white = zero volts. Touching red and white = zero volts. Touching black and red = zero volts. But touching the black while grounding the other probe to the outlet box = 120V. All three of those wires were wired into the regular lightswitch (which enabled power to both the fan motor and light on the old fan). The switchbox itself is built for two switches, and the other switch wasn't even hooked up to anything (dummy switch). So there are other wires in the switchbox, but they weren't used for this switch I'm replacing. I'm just so confused, I cannot figure out how to wire this remote transmitter. Can anyone help, or should I spend another $25 for a battery-powered transmitter (on top of the $250 I spent on the fan)? I know the transmitter itself is not defective, I can get it to light up if I connect it to a 9-volt battery.
