I installed an outlet for a new light in the bathroom. I also added an outlet for the new switch. I pulled the power for the switch from an existing outlet. I installed a dimmer with on/off preset switch and a locator light, which is suppose to be on when the switch is off. I was surprised to see that the switch was always HOT and the locator switch always off, that is, I could not turn it off. Thought it was a faulty switch, so I took it back and got another one. Same problem. OK...time for some troubleshooting...I already had the same type dimmer switch working in another location, so I took that dimmer switch and installed it in the new wiring. Lo and behold...same problem...and I thus know it is not just the switch. Here are specifics: 1) the existing outlet is on a GFCI circuit 2) the switch is a Leviton Slide Dimmer WITH Locator Light and on/off preset switch. It can be wired as 2 pole or 3 pole, but in this case, it is wired as simple 2 pole. Only thing I can suspect is that this particular switch will not work on a GFCI circuit, but if so, do not understant why. Is that correct? If so, why? Is the problem with the switch's internal wiring for the locator light powered by a GFCI circuit? If that is the case, do you thing a dimmer with on/off but no locator light would work OK? Karl

We have 4 outdoor floodlights controlled by a single switch inside the house. I would like to add a timer if possible so these lights will turn on and off at certain times to match our other outdoor/landscape lighting at night. Is this even possible? I have seen a little piece that screws into the socket and then the bulb screws into it and it will turn on the lights when it gets dark and then off when it gets light again ... a dawn/dusk thing ... but I really don't want the lights on all the time at night, just from say 7pm to 2am. Is there any way to easily add a timer to this circuit or would it involve calling out an electrician to rewire a bunch of stuff? These are regular 120V lights, not the low voltage lights commonly used for landscape lighting, etc. I did stumble across an electronic timer wall switch which seems like it would work. You just replace your standard light switch with this piece and you can program it to turn on and off at whatever time you want. But I'd rather go with something that is installed outside so I don't have to look at it on the wall in the entry of the house, etc. It's sort of unsightly for this application. Any other ideas?
